But the most important thing to you will be the fact that you will also be free of the fear of the dreaded “gate arrest” upon release. You would leave custody with a clean slate, you won’t be looking over your shoulder all the time, panicking when there is an unexpected knock on the door or looking away every time you see a police officer.

You would not receive the full sentence you would normally expect as the Courts are aware that if the sentencing does not reflect the fact that you have taken part in op clean slate, then this would have the adverse effect and put people off taking part in the future. But you would gain extra credit on your sentence. Q} But won’t this just make my sentence worse?Ī} You would have time added to your sentence for the offences you have TIC. Q} Why should I go to the police and help them solve a crime they are obviously struggling to do?Ī} You can’t be forced to take part in op clean slate, it is purely on a voluntary basis. This in turn enables the police to go to the victim and inform them that the crime against them has been solved, thus giving the victim “closure” without the need to go to Court to give evidence and face the person responsible for the crime they have committed against them. A radar station, PT boat base, two landing craft bases and a supply dump were also built on the islands. Airfield No.2 was built nearby, with a 4,500ft runway. 1 was built on the south-east part of Banika, and a 3,100ft runway was ready by May (later extended to 6,000ft). Two airfields were soon built on the island. A major air attack came in early June 1943, as part of a wider Japanese aerial assault on the Russell Islands and Savo Island that cost them 152 aircraft.

The Japanese did carry out a series of air raids over the island, starting on 6 March and ending in July 1943, but they were unable to interrupt the construction of a large American base. They prepared to fight off a possible Japanese counterattack, but none came. On the next morning the 169th Infantry landed and the garrison was complete. They cleared the Pepesala peninsula and Baisen Island, and the islands were declared secured at 12.00hours.
